NLMK worked out a new technology for suppression of emissions

The experts of Novolipetsk Iron & Steel Corporation together with the researchers from Lipetsk State Technical University developed a new technology for significant reduction of hazardous sulfur-containing gases emissions in the process of blast furnace slag recycling.
At present the most accessible and economically justified way to neutralize toxic sulphur compounds while recycling slag melts is the correction of their chemistry by using special chemical agents.
What makes a new technology completely different from all the others is the possibility to use as reaction agents such wastes of iron and steel production as sludge, dust and scale. Inputting them different ways into the liquid sludge significantly reduces the emissions of gas-like compounds of sulfur in blast furnace shops as well as in all other stages of slag processing.
Introduction of the new technology will reduce hydrogen sulfide emission 12 times and sulfuric anhydride 27 times. Taking into consideration that blast furnace slag is recycled onto the open site near the city residential regions, the new technology will significantly lessen the impact of the production process on the atmosphere. Besides it will be possible to recycle hardly-recyclable wastes of these iron and steel production stage.
At present NLMK executes a cycle of work for implementation of this technology for the blast furnace No. 4. In the future it is planned to equip all the rest furnaces of NLMK with such devices for charging the agent. Full implementation of this technology is planned for 2003.
